Can the WiFi owner see your incognito history?
Partly - and the part they can see is usually enough. A private window is a decision your browser makes about its own disk. The router sits below that decision and forwards every request regardless.

What a network can see
- -The domains you connect to, via DNS lookups and TLS handshakes.
- -Timestamps and how long each connection lasted.
- -Your device identity on the network - hostname and MAC address.
- -Rough data volumes, which distinguish video from reading.
What HTTPS keeps hidden from them
- -The specific pages and URLs beyond the domain.
- -Your search query text.
- -Page content, form data and credentials.
So a network sees that you used a search engine, not what you asked - unless the engine itself logs it, which is the point of searching without being tracked.
Managed devices are a different story
A work or school laptop can carry monitoring software, a corporate root certificate, or a filtering proxy. Those read traffic before or after encryption, so private browsing changes nothing. Assume full visibility on a device you do not own.
How to close the gap
- -Use a no-logs VPN: the network sees one encrypted tunnel and nothing else.
- -Enable encrypted DNS (DNS over HTTPS) so lookups are not readable in plain text.
- -Use a search engine that keeps no query logs, so no third party holds the text either.
- -Avoid signing in on networks you do not trust.
