What is incognito mode?

Incognito mode - also called private browsing or a private window - is a browser session that forgets itself. When you close it, your history, cookies, cached files and typed form data are discarded from the device. That is the whole feature. It is local amnesia, not anonymity.

Diagram explaining what incognito mode hides and what private browsing still exposes

What incognito mode actually hides

  • -Browsing history: pages you visit never appear in the browser's history list.
  • -Cookies and site data: created during the session, deleted when the last private window closes.
  • -Form and search-bar autofill: what you type is not remembered for next time.
  • -Signed-in state: you start logged out of everything, which is why it is useful for second accounts and shared computers.

What it never hides

  • -Your IP address. Every site, ad script and tracker on the page still sees it.
  • -Your search queries. The search engine still receives them and can still log them against your IP.
  • -Your network. An employer, school, cafĂ© Wi-Fi or internet provider can still see the domains you reach.
  • -Your fingerprint. Screen size, fonts, timezone and GPU details still combine into a recognisable signature.

How to open a private window

  • -Chrome and Edge: Ctrl+Shift+N (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+N (Mac).
  • -Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P or Cmd+Shift+P.
  • -Safari on Mac: Cmd+Shift+N, then confirm the window is labelled Private.
  • -iPhone and Android: open the tab switcher and choose the Private or Incognito tab group.

The gap incognito leaves open

The most revealing thing you produce online is not your history file - it is your queries. What you search for exposes your health, finances, relationships and intentions in plain language, and incognito mode sends those queries to the search engine untouched.

Closing that gap needs a search layer that does not log queries in the first place. DeepIncognito is built that way: nothing about the search is retained, sessions self-destruct on inactivity, and a single tap erases everything on screen.
