What does incognito mode do, exactly?
Incognito mode is precise about its job and vague in its branding. It manages what your browser writes to your own disk. That is the whole feature - and it is genuinely useful once you stop expecting more.

The four things it changes
- -History: pages you open are not written to your browsing history.
- -Cookies and site data: created in a temporary container, discarded on close.
- -Form and search-bar entries: not saved for autofill.
- -Sessions: you start signed out of everything, which is why it doubles as a second account window.
The six things it leaves untouched
- -Your IP address, which every site and script receives.
- -Search engine logs, which record the query text and timestamp.
- -Network visibility - your provider, employer or school still sees destinations.
- -Browser fingerprinting, which works normally inside the session.
- -Downloads and bookmarks, which persist after the window closes.
- -DNS lookups, unless you separately use encrypted DNS.
