How to turn off incognito mode

Incognito has no off switch, because it is not a setting - it is a window. Turning it off means closing that window, or removing the option entirely on a device you manage.

How to turn off incognito mode - toggle switching private browsing off

Exit on desktop

  • -Close the dark window: Ctrl+Shift+W on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Shift+W on Mac.
  • -Closing the last private window discards that session's cookies and cache.
  • -Your normal window is unaffected - nothing needs restoring afterwards.

Exit on iPhone and Android

  • -iPhone Safari: tap the tabs button, choose a non-private tab group, then close the private tabs.
  • -Chrome on Android: open the tab switcher, select the incognito section, then Close all incognito tabs.
  • -Samsung Internet: tabs, then Turn off Secret mode.

Stop it opening automatically

  • -Windows: right-click the browser shortcut, open Properties, and remove --incognito or -private from the Target field.
  • -Mac: check any Automator or launch item that starts the browser with a private flag.
  • -Check the browser's On startup setting and any pinned taskbar shortcuts too.

Disable private browsing for good

  • -Windows: set the IncognitoModeAvailability policy to 1 to remove the option from Chrome and Edge.
  • -Chromebook or managed Mac: apply the same Chrome policy through device management.
  • -iPhone: Settings, Screen Time, Content and Privacy Restrictions, then limit adult websites - this hides Private Browsing.
  • -Android: use Family Link or a supervised profile; stock Chrome cannot be restricted otherwise.

If the point was privacy, not the window

People often reach for incognito, find it insufficient, and turn it off. The gap is the search record, not the window - see what to use instead of incognito mode. DeepIncognito logs no queries, keeps nothing on the device, and destructs the session after inactivity, so there is no window state to manage at all.
